Podemos fingir que nuestra familia es feliz o podemos hacer como Mafalda: asumir que ninguna es perfecta, pero que eso es lo que las hace únicas, acogedoras, nuestras.

«La familia es la base de la sociedad», leyó Miguelito; y de inmediato pensó: «¿La familia de quién? La mía no tiene la culpa de nada.» «En esta familia no hay jefes, somos una cooperativa». Lo dijo Mafalda cuando un vendedor llamó a su puerta preguntando si el jefe de la casa podía salir al rellano.

Evidentemente, la niña entendió que en los tiempos que corren eso era una tontería. Si hay algo que haga aún más fuertes los vínculos entre padres e hijos, es la capacidad de ésta para repartir tareas, para deshacerse de los roles estúpidos que la sociedad impone y para encontrar el cariño en los defectos de sus componentes. Mafalda lo sabe muy bien, y las viñetas de Quino lo demuestran: la única certeza sobre las familias es que sólo serán felices aquellas conscientes de que nunca, jamás, serán perfectas.

Obviously, the girl understood that these days it was nonsense. If there is one thing that makes the bonds between parents and children even stronger, it is their capacity to distribute tasks, to get rid of the stupid roles that society imposes and to find love in the defects of its components. Mafalda knows this very well, and Quino’s vignettes demonstrate this: the only certainty about families is that the families who are happy are those who understand that they will never, ever be perfect.
