A new framework for understanding why patient journeys through American health care are circuitous, costly, and lonely—and how to improve them.
Every year, millions of Americans endure health care odysseys—harrowing journeys in search of clarity and relief from their health problems. The toll is mounting: staggering waste, declining trust, a demoralized workforce, and a growing burden of chronic illness. All are symptoms of a system designed to churn out episodes of care rather than guide patients efficiently and humanely from sickness to health.
In The Velocity of Care, Harvard surgeon and health care strategist Rena Xu offers a new framework for diagnosing—and treating—what ails American medicine. “Velocity of care” captures not just speed but direction: it asks whether a patient’s trajectory is advancing from problem to resolution or veering off course.
This missing dimension holds the key to improving care. Xu traces the system’s dysfunction to the relationship problems among four key stakeholders—patients, providers, payers, and places of care—whose competing interests keep trajectories slow, costly, and fragmented. Through vivid stories and incisive analysis, she shows what a system oriented around trajectory improvement would look like and how to achieve it.
The Velocity of Care is essential reading for health care professionals, policymakers, and innovators—and for anyone who has struggled to navigate the system and felt the gap between what care is and what it could be.
