In the aftermath of the Great War, Biggles is contacted by an ambassador in London, alerting him to growing tensions between the small European nation of Maltovia and their sabre-rattling neighbour, Lovitzna. Maltovia needs help to create an air force to protect themselves, and Biggles is just the man for the job.
After a menacing visit from the Lovitznian Minister in London, Biggles is convinced: he will offer Maltovia his services.
Upon arriving there, however, Biggles quickly senses something isn’t right: the Commander-in-Chief of the Maltovian forces is strangely hostile, and Biggles’ aircraft hangar is set ablaze in mysterious circumstances. This is not the simple mission it was meant to be

Following a bad bout of fever, Biggles is taking it easy. His doctor has advised him that a sea voyage will do him good, and so he is relaxing aboard the S.S. Stavritos bound for Athens, with Algy and Ginger for company.
It is not all smooth sailing, however. Disaster occurs when a fighter plane attacks and crashes into the deck, sinking the ship and forcing everyone on board to swim to safety.

Paul Cronfelt, head of a firm of bullion brokers called Cronfelt and Carstairs, has a problem. Shipments of gold and precious stones being ferried between European capitals by aeroplane are being lost, the planes either crashing in mysterious circumstances or else landing without the valuables they set off with.
The situation cannot be allowed to continue, and he needs a brave, daring pilot who can find out what is happening and put a stop to it, once and for all. He needs Biggles, and asks him to set up a new airline to transport the valuable cargo.
Biggles is reluctant to take on the enterprise. Until, that is, he receives a mysterious telephone call from Germany, warning him off Together with Algy, Ginger and Smyth, Biggles & Co. is born!

Forced down by thick fog, Biggles and Algy cut short a pleasure flight and land on a river in Norfolk to wait out the weather. Exploring the banks, they stumble across a wartime pillbox with papers written in German hidden inside! Shortly afterwards, a massive plane painted black to camouflage it against the night sky sets down on the water with a roar.
Biggles investigates, boarding the craft to find it is a bomber of immense proportions. He quickly finds himself in trouble when, becoming trapped inside one of the plane’s compartments, he feels it take off with him still inside!

The Great War is over, and Biggles is bored. The adrenaline-pounding thrill of flying over the trenches seems a lifetime ago. When he receives word that his uncle is back in the country from his own adventures, Biggles takes Algy along to visit him.
But Biggles’ uncle is in a spot of hot water. While he was exploring in Brazil, he found himself on the trail of a long-lost treasure. But, before he could locate it, his treacherous porters turned against him, tracked him back to England, and now have him under siege in his own house.
