Devastating news reaches sixteen-year-old Peter ‘Thirty’ Fortymore at his school in England: his older brother, Nigel, is missing in action, believed dead, after being shot down over the Western Front.
Thirty is adamant that his brother may still be alive, and is determined to find him. With help of his best friend, Rip, Thirty runs away from school with a ridiculous and daring plan to get to France.
The two boys successfully pose as officers in the R.F.C. and steal two Sopwith Camels to cross the Channel. A tumultuous journey lands them in hot water, only to be saved by a pilot from 266 Squadron, a certain James Bigglesworth.
