Staff Picks: Almudena Rincón’s Favorites
Hi! I’m Almudena, a managing editorial assistant at the Putnam imprint of Penguin Random House. I’m a big fan of contemporary romance — especially stories full of yearning and coming-of-age — but I also love essay collections, literary fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction. I’m usually reading a few books at once. You can catch me listening to a queer romance audiobook on a walk by Lake Michigan or reading nonfiction in Spanish (my native language) at a café in Chicago. A Long Petal of the Sea
by Isabel Allende
It’s no surprise that Allende is my favorite author, and every single one of her novels tells an incredible, engaging, and important story about a part of history that is so necessary to explore. This novel hit closer to home for me as it’s about the Spanish Civil War and refugees escaping to South America. The story moves from the war to the escape, to the journey, to building a home … in a flawless and entrancing way. I loved following the characters’ lives and learning about my country’s history.

Fun for the Whole Family
by Jennifer E. Smith
The character complexity and family dynamics are so well done throughout this novel. Often, it’s hard to feel like people in books could be real people — this book completely subverts that, bringing the four Endicott siblings and the secondary characters to life in a way that it’s impossible not to connect with them on an emotional level.
