Come and Get It takes place in Fayetteville, Arkansas, a college town I called home for more than three years. Kiley Reid hits Southern University culture on the nose by creatively and subtly revealing her characters’ desires, beliefs, and biases through brilliantly written dialogue. I may be biased because she mentions many of my favorite Fayetteville landmarks and businesses by name, but I think anyone would find this book hard to put down.

Years from now, you’ll remember the first time you read this book, in the same way you still remember when and where you first read Harry Potter. I was on the beach when Impossible Creatures cracked open something imaginative and creative within me that hadn’t been tapped for years. It made me feel so childlike and inspired that I spent hours building an extravagant sand castle with seashell walls, surrounded by a functional moat to protect it from the evening tide. Katherine Rundell has a way with words that will resonate with adults as much as her middle grade audience.
