Bright Lights, Big City
by Jay McInerney
This book is such a surprise. New York City in the 1980s — nightclubs, fashion shows, cocaine, parties, more cocaine — in the hands of a different author it would be easy to only see what’s on the surface. Written in the second person, we are instead guided through this mania to a tipping point of grief, and ultimately, redemption. I see parallels here to Ottessa Moshfegh’s My Year of Rest and Relaxation and the two would be great companion reads.
