About the Author
Andrew Delbanco is the Alexander Hamilton Professor of American Studies at Columbia University. He is the author of Melville: His World and Work; College: What it Was, Is, and Should Be; The Death of Satan: How Americans Have Lost the Sense of Evil; Required Reading: Why Our American Classics Matter Now; and The Real American Dream, among other notable books. His essays on American history and culture appear regularly in The New York Review of Books and other journals. In 2001, he was named by Time as “America’s Best Social Critic” and elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. President Barack Obama presented Andrew Delbanco with the National Humanities Medal in 2012.
