    Graeme Gibson, celebrated Canadian author and spouse of Margaret Atwood, has died. Nan A. Talese, President & Publisher, Nan A. Talese/Doubleday said: “I was lucky enough to publish two of Graeme’s books – THE BEDSIDE BOOK OF BIRDS and THE BEDSIDE BOOK OF BEASTS, both glorious – and of course all of Peggy’s books for forty years now. They were so happy to be in one another’s lives, and we were so happy to be in theirs. Graeme was a brilliant, gentle soul and will be deeply missed.”

    The 2019 Pre-Holiday Season Officially Begins: Penguin Random House Annual 2-Day Transit Program Now Underway. For many independent booksellers across the U.S., the earliest sign of the coming year-end holidays is not The Nutcracker over the sound system—but the announcement that the annual Penguin Random House 2-Day transit program has begun. The 2019-20 initiative, announced by Jaci Updike, President, U.S. Sales, Penguin Random House, extends through March 2, 2020.

    There’s a Book for That: Amazon Rainforest

    The fires raging across the Amazon rainforests have caused an international outcry. Tropical forests are home to many species of plants and animals found nowhere else. They are also important refuges for indigenous people, and contain enormous stores of carbon that would otherwise contribute to climate change. Breaking news this week reports that the special communications office for Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro told CNN that the country would turn down the $20 million in international aid for the fires that was pledged at the G7 summit in France on Monday.

    Over the past three years, the Penguin Random House Library Marketing Department has embraced the company’s reader-centric mission, and has devoted itself to reaching out directly to library patrons, in addition to librarians themselves. They softly launched their Borrow.Read.Repeat patron-facing platform in 2016 to keep patrons in the know about the hottest upcoming titles, and began cultivating a following for the BRR blog, e-newsletter, and social platforms with grassroots marketing efforts, including in-person book buzzes at library systems around the country.
